Speeding car kills pedestrian, injured 16 students aboard school bus in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- One person was killed on Monday and nearly two dozen others were injured after a speeding car ran a red light and struck a pedestrian before broadsiding a school bus in Los Angeles, authorities said.

The accident happened at about 3.22 p.m. PDT at East 1st and Soto streets when a black BMW ran a red light at a high rate of speed, knocking down a pedestrian and slamming into a school bus that was returning students to Roosevelt High School.

The crash was so violent that the school bus overturned, injuring students inside. While the pedestrian was killed, the two people - both juveniles - who were in the BMW tried to flee the scene.

However, the suspects were quickly apprehended by construction workers who had witnessed the crash. It was not immediately clear what charges they would face, or if they were intoxicated.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said 18 students were transported with minor injuries to area hospitals by LAFD ambulance. Twenty-six other students were transported to LAPD Hollenbeck station where they were picked up by their parents.

It was not immediately known if the bus driver was injured in the accident.
