Video Cassette To Dvd

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I have just been given a load of old family video that I would like to transfer to a more modern digital format.Do any of you out there know of any where in Bangkok that could do this, if so where and any ideas regarding the price?

It would be very nice to keep these memories and be able to watch them again thanks in advance for your help

Dumpling.

I've got one old videocassette that I'd like transferred to DVD, too. Someday I'll follow up and take whatever advice we can garner here.

I have heard that there are shops in Pantip Plaza that will do it, but no idea about costs.

Do you have a VHS player? if so, you can do it yourself with the appropriate interface.

Try MBK I think it's the floor that sells the perfumes just along from Manpong dvd shop, sorry no idea of the cost though.

A few months ago at Pantip Plaza I found shop right by the up escalator (2? 3? floor) that did such conversion, 1000 baht all in. No idea of the quality.

The do-it-yourself is no cakewalk and will take some time and practice. Sony has (or had) a very nice player that took your VHS tape and burned it to DVD, all typical Sony easy to do. As I remember cost was about US$250.

I found the easiest way was to play the VHS into my camcorder/handycam (must have a model that has S-Video or RCA (Red/White Yellow) etc. INPUT), and then record back on the PC through the normal interface (ieee USB), rip DVD with with the quality you desire, but it will mostly be determined with the original camcorder recording, so the better the cam, the better the conversion.

I had one VHS cassette with a copy of Hamlet (which I didn't really want to keep) and a community TV one hour production from 1982, which I did want.

I have no idea what the original quality of the program is, as I have no player for cassettes. And it was a 1982 community tv production.

Took the tape to Micro on the 4th floor of Pantip Plaza, just to the right around the corner at the top of the up escalator. You can see their sign from almost anywhere over the open courtyard.

He charged me 200 baht to extract that program and burn it onto a DVD with special label. Perhaps that fee was related to the fact I only wanted the one short program, or perhaps it's a standard VHS to DVD fee. We didn't discuss the details.

The picture quality is barely adequate, and the audio is out of synch, although I can follow what's going on. However, as I said, I have no idea of the original quality on the cassette, so no way can I place any responsibility for the quality of the DVD on Micro.

I think I saw some signs above other shops nearby that indicated a similar service.

I have an email address for them, but won't post it here in accordance with TV rules. If someone wants it, please PM and I'll gladly send it on. The phone number I have is 087-982-8033. He speaks reasonable English but I don't know how much clarity there would be over the phone, so Thai is probably better if you phone rather than visit.
