Hello All. I'll be going back to Thailand in late December/early January. I plan on staying for 3 months. I'm looking for volunteer opportunites working within sex trafficking and with dog rescue. If anyone has ANY information it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there are already threads relating to this, could you please point me in the right direction. Thank you!

Be aware that even volunteer, unpaid work, requires a work permit and special visa.

Once you find an organization that wants you to work as a volunteer with them, be sure to get them to organize the appropriate work permit for you. Otherwise, you are working illegally and subject to fines and deportation.

It's wonderful to want to volunteer, but unless you are able to work in a professional capacity, it may be more of a hinderance and cost to the charity than help. The charities that engage in the activity you seek usually have a way of doing things and that means traininng staff. Training takes time. Short time general staff can also be very disruptive, interfering with worker cohesion and making errors due to a lack of familiarity. People cannot just show up and volunteer to work with the charities working with "sex trafficing". The personal security of the workers is paramount and short timers represent a significant threat to security, i.e. moles.

If you want to make a difference, you can give money to a bonafide animal rescue group. Short of becoming a vigilante killer, I don't think you can help in the sex trafficing response.

Thank you for caring though and may a thousand blessings fall upon your head like raindrops over Phuket.

How about orphans and something with elephants? Or Burmese refugees and river dolphins?

Geriatric Kid....thanks for your concern on whether I would be disruptive but I do have professional experience and that's why I want to volunteer in that area. I currently work in an after care facility for victims rescued from human trafficking. So, I'm fully aware of all the risks etc.

Thankfully, you know what I meant by "disruptive". ;) If you have experience, I suggest you try through one of the women's organizations in your homeland. Several projects are funded by these groups. I don't know much about sex trafficing except for how depressing the topic is, however, if I pick something I know, several of the women's health advocacy groups in Europe have provided expertise and funding on women's health issues such as cancer screenings and reproductive issues. For example, one German group helped with breast cancer screening fieldworker training. The Swedish womans group helped child nutrition program. You might also wish to consider contacting some of the Burmese charities. Burmese women are a high risk group due to their refugee status and they basically have very few resources available.

Don't be discouraged by the negativity. There is an underlying fear and hatred of women that can think for themselves and that won't make nice for Farang man with beer gut.

Thank you for your reply:) I've done some researching and have made some phone calls and sent emails. My main purpose for this post was to see if anyone hanging around this board already volunteered or worked for an organization that needed help.

Oh and believe me, I won't be discouraged by the negativity. I spent 3 months in Thailand previously and know that Farang man with beer gut doesn't talk to youngish Canadian girl;)

Good luck with your project and I wish you well, but I also know the dangers. Some of the police are involved in the trade and you never know who your enemies are. I almost got myself in trouble trying to help some women during my first few trips to Thailand when I thought the police were on my side. I quickly learned the error of my ways.
