New 3Bb User.. Is This Normal?

Hello all,

i got my 3bb ADSL installed today (the 5mbit/s down~0.5mbit/s up package).

I am appalled to learn that most international locations ping >2 seconds!

Obviously there are some routing issues--is this common with 3bb? Anyone having similar problems today? (I'm in the Nakhon area). Is their technical support any good/worth calling?

I moved to 3bb from CAT CDMA, because the connection there was too bad and dropping all the time, but boy did I not expect this!

"International" internet IS slow in Thailand, yes, with EVERY provider. There are many threads about this.

Your pings should be better though. Call customer support and they should correct it.

The speed to international web sites will be lower than in-Thailand web sites. It varies by ISP and by the various packages they offer. . I'm on the TOT 6Mb plan and get about 1 to 2Mb speeds to international sites.

But you ping time is way, way high. I just did a ping to bbc.co.uk and the time was 359ms...see attached. I would agree you need to call 3BB.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will call their support first thing tomorrow morning. I know Thailand has bandwidth issues, but this really scares me! 0.5s I can live with; 5s not.

sbk: I took the cheapest package they've got. I just checked and it says Indy, actually 6Mb/s (not 5) for 590B, some sort of promotion.

I am on 3BB, I am getting pretty bad ping times to both the UK and the USA, here's your example

$ ping bbc.co.uk
PING bbc.co.uk (212.58.224.138): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 212.58.224.138: icmp_seq=0 ttl=112 time=640.948 ms
64 bytes from 212.58.224.138: icmp_seq=1 ttl=112 time=510.960 ms
64 bytes from 212.58.224.138: icmp_seq=2 ttl=112 time=482.574 ms

It's not 2 seconds though.. around 0.5. Should be around 0.3. 3BB always goes to shit in the evening. Next morning after a good sleep, it's fast again.

Indy is used for inside the country and is guaranteed to be slow for overseas sites. anyone who wants to surf outside of Thailand must sign up for the premier package.

Regardles of provider, bandwidth or package in Thailand, your pings to, say, North America should be between 250 and 450ms. Yours are ridiculously high and I imagine the resulting latencies would make using the connection for many purposes somewhere between useless and agonizing. I think you should complain and nag until someone looks into this.

run your traceroute to the same place as your ping (bbc.co.uk) , it will help narrow down where the latency starts.
