BEIJING, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Wednesday called for accelerating the reforms on public hospitals to provide better health care for the Chinese people.

According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, Li also said that China is in need of establishing an essential medicine system. The head of the State Council's leading group on health care reforms made his remarks at a meeting in Beijing.

The essential medicine system proposed in the fore mentioned reforms, will allow citizens to acquire affordable, effective and safe medications, as declared by Vice Premier Li.

Furthermore, Li said that grassroots medical institutions should become Chinese people’s first choice for visiting a doctor. Grassroots is China’s rural medical and health service network.

The reforms should also provide a rational division of responsibilities among major public hospitals and grassroots clinics. In addition, large hospitals should establish a patient-oriented diagnosis and treatment procedure and provide a better environment.

Finally, the Chinese Vice Premier said that private capital should also be a key element in the reforms as investments will aid in the construction of medical institutions and will create a competitive market mechanism.
