Nigeria seizes Iranian weapons cache allegedly headed for Gaza

LAGOS, NIGERIA (BNO NEWS) -- Nigerian authorities on Tuesday seized 13 containers of weapons from Iran allegedly headed for Hamas in Gaza Strip, Israeli media reported on Thursday.

The interception was made by the Nigeria's secret service at the port of Lagos in what authorities believe is part of a new smuggling route from Iran to the occupied Palestine. The arms secured included rocket launchers, grenades and other explosives.

The illegal arms shipment was discovered camouflaged as building material after it was unloaded from an Iranian ship. The vessel docked for a few hours in Lagos, unloaded the weapons cache and sailed on.

"On opening the first container, the service operatives discovered rocket launchers, grenades and other explosives; the weapons were concealed among crates of floor tiles," Nigerian State Security Service (SSS) spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar said.

The Nigerian government said that it would trace the source of the containers and assured that security operatives have intensified their efforts to locate more arms and ammunition at the Lagos port.

"At this point, the only thing is to find out about this containers and the ship. Our concern now is to get to the root of the matter, to know who is involved. At present, it will not be necessary to jump into conclusion, we will find out where they are going, and where the ship is coming from," National Security Adviser, General Andrew Owoye Azazi, declared.

Preliminary information suggests that the weapons cache exposed a possible new arms smuggling rout from Iran to Gaza via Africa. It is believed that the new route was set up after the difficulties presented due to the presence of international supervision in the Red Sea and the Sudan region, the former route used to transport weapons.
