Five women killed, 14 injured after gunmen attacks buses in northern Mexico

CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Five women were killed and at least 14 more were injured on Thursday after gunmen attacked three buses carrying workers in Ciudad Juarez, in northern Mexico.

Officials said the attack took place at about 3:00 a.m. local time as the buses were transporting the workers back to their homes. The workers, mostly women, were returning home from an assembly plant in the town of Caseta, near the Texas border.

The three buses transport workers back to their homes as part of their benefits at the Eagle Ottawa assembly plant. As the buses were entering Caseta, three trucks intercepted the convoy. Five armed men stepped out of the trucks and without notice opened fire against them.

"Three female workers were killed at the scene inside two of the buses that were impacted by rifles. After local and federal police arrived, they escorted another bus to a Ciudad Juarez hospital where two more women died in the way," local police said.

Rescue teams and paramedics rushed to the scene but had to use one of the buses to transport the injured people to hospital as the wounds were severe. From the 14 injured, two of them were men. Three people are reported to be in serious condition.

Due to the severity of the incident, the government deployed Army soldiers to secure the scene and assist the victims and the local population.

Eagle Ottawa has two assembly plants in Ciudad Juarez and employs hundreds of workers in the nearby areas that pick up and return to their places of residence through its buses.
