"American" is not a language. The Americas range from North America at the top to South America all the way at the bottom of globe. In the Americas there are hundreds of languages spoken. Some of them are indigeneous people's languages such as Cree, and others are common such as spanish and portuguese. There is creole, dutch, french and of course english.

In answer to your query, technically I could say that I am capable of speaking 3. Once upon a time I was able to communicate in Bhasa Malay, but I have forgotten everything otherwise I'd have said 4. I had to demonstrate competency in a 2nd language as part of my graduate diploma qualifications. I do not speak gibberish, Urdu, Farsi or any ofthe arab dialects.
