While Trump fails, Carney outsmarts him once again
I worked for a company that exported cold-rolled steel from Australia to the west coast of America in the 80's and 90's. No export subsidies, no government support. Competing for sales in the world market. The company could land steel, including the transport cost, all the way across the Pacific, cheaper than the same steel could be railed from the mills in Cleveland and Chicago. When I visited US Steel in the 80's, it had a shear line where the shearing operation was equipment activated by ropes. It had been in use since 1900. Productivity compared to hydraulically-powered shears was very ordinary. While politicians undoubtedly contributed to the demise of American manufacturing, IMO failure to modernize was icing on the cake. America has 140 km of high speed rail. China has 48,000 km, to expand to 60,000 km. Be of good cheer, though. America spends more on defense than the next 10 countries combined, so the US is modern in that respect. I don't see any signs defense spending is contracting. -

Crime Student Assaults Teacher Over Exam Score Dispute
Picture courtesy of Amarin. A female school teacher in Uthai Thani province has been left with serious injuries after being violently attacked by a male Mathayom 5 student in front of classmates, reportedly over dissatisfaction with his midterm exam score. According to reports, the incident occurred on 5 August when the student confronted the teacher before class, asking about his mathematics exam results. The teacher informed him that he had scored 18 out of 20 points. She explained that although his answers were correct, he had not shown the required working, as instructed in the question and therefore could not receive full marks. The student, unhappy with the explanation, sought a second opinion from another mathematics teacher, who confirmed that marking was at the discretion of each teacher. Returning to the first teacher, the student demanded a higher score, which she refused, advising him to calm down before continuing the discussion. He reportedly kicked the teacher’s desk before leaving the room. Around 10 minutes later, the student returned, sat briefly and demanded an apology. When the teacher challenged him, he allegedly launched a violent assault, punching her repeatedly in the face, kneeing her in the ribs and kicking her. CCTV footage reportedly shows the student delivering 14 to 15 punches, one knee strike and a kick before other students, all female, intervened. The teacher sustained severe bruising to her face, swelling to the head and bruised ribs. She has since filed a police complaint with Nong Chang Police Station. Police are due to question her on 12 August. The student’s parents have apologised to the teacher on their son’s behalf. The school has suspended the student, who has since submitted a request to withdraw from the institution. The victim has stated she intends to pursue the matter to the fullest extent of the law, saying the dispute over marks did not justify violence. She has also spoken of lingering trauma from the attack, which she says still causes her to startle at night. A local teacher’s Facebook post expressing solidarity and calling for support under the hashtag #Saveครู (“Save the Teacher”) has attracted widespread attention online. Police are continuing their investigation, while the teacher remains under medical care and emotional support. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-08-11 -
