China supports UN role in coordinating reconstruction of Afghanistan

UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) -- China's deputy envoy to the United Nations, Wang Min, on Thursday expressed the Chinese support towards the UN core role in promoting and coordinating the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, Wang addressed the UN General Assembly on the situation in Afghanistan. Wang said that the reconstruction in the Arab country has set a path but it still faces many challenges.

"We appreciate what has been done by the United Nations in promoting Afghan reconstruction and support UN's core role in coordination," Wang said. "But the challenges call for continued efforts by Afghan people and government, and sustained attention and support of the international community."

China's deputy envoy to the UN added that in order to achieve peace and stability, the Afghan government and its citizens need to be at the helm of the nation as the goal is to have an Afghan nation controlled by Afghans themselves.

To achieve that objective and progress, balanced efforts should be made in economic development, security and stability, national reconciliation, good governance, the rule of law and fight against drugs.

"The international community should align its assistance with Afghan national strategy and the priority areas identified by the Afghans," the deputy envoy said.

Wang also highlighted that China is very concerned over the deterioration of the security situation in Afghanistan, as well as with the increase of security incidents which have resulted in high civilian casualties.

Since January this year, China has provided additional 160 million yuan ($24 million) grant assistance in fields such as infrastructure, health care, sanitation and education.

From 2002 to 2009, the Asian giant has awarded more than 900 yuan ($135 million) in assistance, canceled $19.5 million of mature debts and built seven projects.
