ISLAMABAD (BNO NEWS) -- A small plane carrying nearly two dozen people crashed in Karachi on early Friday morning, with smoke seen rising from the crash site, authorities said.

The small aircraft, carrying employees from a U.S. oil company, crashed in the area of Gulistan-e Jauhar in Karachi, shortly after departing Jinnah International Airport in Pakistan's largest city.

Pervez George, a spokesman for Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), said 17 passengers and 3 crew members were believed to be on board the aircraft when it went down. He said those on board, except the crew members, were employees of a U.S. oil company.

The passengers on board the aircraft were traveling to an oil field in Bhit Shah, in Pakistan's Sindh province. Their nationalities were not immediately known.

Footage from the scene showed thick black clouds of smoke rising from the crash site and firefighters were attempting to bring the fire under control. Private television stations reported that at least 10 bodies had been recovered.
