Pretty much everything is acceptable in Thailand. There are so many people from so many cultures here it doesn't really matter what you look like so long as you are respectful and happy. I've watched people of all shapes, sizes, outfits and hair styles intermingle with no negativity unless some guy is an obnoxious boor. There are always two ways to say the same thing. One way is respectful of the other's feelings and the other way is to be always making "put-downs.". The "put-downs" are quite popular on thaivisa, but won't get you very far in real life in Thailand. Thais are VERY sensitive to "face".

Well, I doubt too many women would have minded it in the ladies forum since he is asking women's opinions, cdnvic, but no worries.

TBH, your Thai friends at home are generally right. Riep roy is more than just neat and tidy and you will have better luck attracting someone in a serious manner if you fit the norm. That said it isn't impossible to meet nice women if you keep your longer hair, but Thais (like everyone else IMO) tend to judge a book by its cover.

Thanks for posting. unfortunately, you're validating what they said- was kinda hoping it was just that they are both so conservative. That said, i kinda figured since, IMO, Thai and other Asian cultures really judge the book by its cover relative to westerners. I think individuality is embraced more in a place like the US. I was kinda hoping that younger Thai's (ie: 20's) were more open, but, i guess they have to consider the reaction of parents who will certainly be more conservative...

an interesting fact is the preference of beautiful Farang women between 20 and 40 in Thailand. Many stay together with extremely long haired, handsome Thais.....

And of course there are Thai ladies, who prefer long haired Farangs. Most of them outside the bar scene.

btw if you are a ladyboy butterfly why do you ask?

Funny, my Thai female friends say the only ones who will not care are <NOTE: these are THEIR WORDS, NOT MINE> prostitutes, girls i meet in a disco (who they say are 95% prostitutes) and other girls only after money.

well, i know i won't be meeting my next gf in a disco- experience talking here as per my linked post above). i may do the social experiment and see how the whole pony tail experiment goes. thing is, i am only in Thailand for 7 months, then back home, then hopefully back for good after that. so i don't want to waste too much time and energy cementing my status as social leper to 'good' Thai girls.

as to my ladyboy status. read the OP for an explanation of my ThaiVisa name.

not to split hairs but.... would you say the above is applicable for a 36 (nearly 37) year old guy interested in dating younger Thai girls* in their 20's who have uni degrees and real jobs? i ask because this is the type of girl i am hoping to meet and this is the kidn of girl that my Thai friends say i have no chance with if i have a pony tail.

i agree on the negativity thing- seems akin to kryptonite when it comes to Thais (and a lot of people, but more so with Thais imo).

*before i get castigated for the younger girls thing.... i'm more attracted to younger girls and, having failed to grow up, i tend to have more in common with them. the last girl i date in my home country is 22, caucasian and asked me out thru a mutual friend.

I don't think it would make a tiny bit of difference if you are clean and reasonably good looking. If a man is confident, walks and talks with authority and a smile on his face it hardly matters what his hair looks like. I shave my head bald and it hasn't hampered me in any way. Women in their twenties are hardly young girls. And a man in his thirties is still a young stud... providing he can back up his walk and talk.

Does the OP know the definition of what 'butterfly' means in Thailand? :whistling: Your user name indicates you like to spread yourself free and easy with the trans-gender variety... just in case there was no clue ;)

All women obviously have different tastes but my experience with 'nice' Thai women is they prefer clean cut. I've heard some not so flattering comments from Thai women about guys who have long hair in Thailand. I, as a western woman, quite like long hair, but it's the Thai ladies you want to be impressing :D!

i think everyone is skipping my OP. the ladyboy butterfly thing is explained. again... it was an insult hurled at me by about a 5 year old Thai boy on sukhumvit when i wouldn't buy flowers from him. i thought it hilarious, ergo my 'name'. i know what the terms mean.

thanks for the input, mirroring what all the women have said so far. seems the opinions here are split among the sexes. i want to agree with the guys, but, of course, they're not my target audience!

and now Ian's post makes me want to give it a go! i agree with all the confidence stuff. the talk i've heard from Thai girls is that bald is not a negative- balding is, but not bald. their preference being that a balding man should just shave it all off. so i think bald, having been fashionable as well for quite a while now, equates to clean cut. no such lineage applies to long hair. i feel what you're getting at though...

Back to basics. I find "piggy-pony -tailed" individuals quite ridiculous. Prancing along thinking they look cute, it is my experience that most Thais find it rather silly. Certainly, more than one taxi driver has made that point to me.

I am personally embarrassed on behalf of all us "farangs" whenever I see one.

There are so many of them parading along Sukhumvit these days, yet you see few in the UK or The US, unless you are in a seaport.

Come on boys. Be more manly. You are being laughed at by Thais and ex-pats alike.

really? only pony tails i saw when i was in BKK a year ago were on older men (think 60's)- don't think i saw a single young guy in 3 months with one. having never 'pranced along' myself, this must be a sight to behold. :whistling:

seaports?! no, i think austin texas, berkeley or oberlin would be better pony tale prancing locales! then again, i've never felt a hairstyle makes one manly or not.

just wondering... are u follicularly challenged, by chance?

I used to have long hair until my mid twenties then I grew up <_< but would never have had it in a ponytail.

Ponytails look ok on girls but in my experience there are three expressions of plonkerhood:-

1. Ponytail on a man (especially a 30 y.o+ man).

2. Hyphenated surname.

3. Wearing a bow tie.

Most people I've come into contact with that incorporate one or more of the above have been utter plonkers.

But then I am biased, have short hair, parents were married before my birth and I couldn't tie a bowie if my life depended on it. :D

Thai hubby has long hair, a lot of his friends (thai men in the late 30's early 40's age group) have long (ish hair) hubby is the only one not married to a thai. I haven't dated a man with short hair since my late teens, as long as it is thick & in good condition I will find a man with long hair attractive, regardless his age. it's my "thing". Hubby once went to the barber whilst I was at work & I came home with short short hair, I was furious & devastated, he hated it too so happy days all around when it grew out again.

Hubbys best friend is married to a nice thai women (to use the vernacular) she is an asst bank manager at a local bkk bank branch, he is a restaurateur & has long hair past his shoulders. His is a good family & they married when both in their 30's so maybe that's why it isn't an issue.

As a general rule I am with the rest of the women so far, it is an issue for younger women esp if still heavily infulenced by family & peers, older women imo will look beyond the hair at other attributes a man has to offer

Your friends sound old. Most people in their 20s will go to a disco once in a while just like most people back home do, it usually doesn't mean anything. Unless you're talking about Nana Disco of course

You probably should cut your hair though. To a lot of chicks it'll make you look a bit of a bum or hippie. Go for a more clean modern look

As long as you keep your long hair clean and healthy I see no problem with it. But if you start going a bit bald at the front - Puleeeze cut it.

I had a crush on the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers until he cut his waist length hair...

:D Dee.

Had a friend in UK, about 50, moustache and pony tail dyed black, cos of the grey. Looked ridiculous but he thought the younger ladies thought it might be cool. Me, no hair, hormone thing so all off. But, any nice Thais l meet don't understand why many farangs have long or pony tail hair. Their thoughts were we were all gentlemen from farang land and all looked like in the films. Shopping once and a guy near by said to his mrs, look Bruce Willis. I wish, l thought, just to be his age.

See a farang today, long grey hair in a pony tail, looked like a hobo, tramp. If you want an up market lady then look the part, not a wanabe hippy. If your not bothered about your lady then do what you want, flip flops, shorts, no deodorant, it's OK, you will find something. :D

talk about sweeping generalizations drawn from my hair. i'm now 20 years older, dress same and smell! if u read the OP you'd see i am far from that. my style is more like guys in their 20's except for the hair. not saying i look 25, but i don't think i look like grandpa with peter pan syndrome either.

They're 26 and 29- but VERY conservative, getting Master's degrees in US kinda girls. That is why i started this thread because i didn't know if they were representative of 'good' Thai girls. Their thought is that if it's a disco where farang go, they're hookers, if it's 90% Thai then the girls are not. They know i speak no Thai, so they know i go to clubs where farang go like Bed Supperclub.

no. i don't get upset by anon people on the internet- you can say whatever you want- your opinion.

btw, i know what you're getting at, but obviously you're off the mark, as i am asking about Thai GIRLS, not boys. besides, Shirley Temple was known for short curly hair, not a pony tail!

also, your response to my query as to your follicular status is noticeably absent. i'll take that as a yes. good luck with that comb over. :o (just messing with you)

Well, we won't put you down as the most prolific of posters on here. You joined in 2005 and have a grand total of 15 posts.

and if you notice, it wasn't until recently that i broke my silence when some guys in a news thread went overboard portraying soi cowboy prostitutes as poor sweet little things forced into selling their bodies because they had no choice, were tricked or worse, and that they're all victims. ha! hence my diatribe giving examples of the real life of most of these girls where the victims are the gullible soft hearted farang (me included). there are certainly countless girls exploited, but the ones you find in the discos, street and bars are far from victims. ok, i'm hijacking my own thread now. so i'll shut up!

A real man is concerned with what he's doing, what he wants to achieve, how he's going to get there. If the lady likes that, then she'll want to come along for the ride, may even want to support him in his efforts, then that's the one he should choose. If she doesn't like his ponytail she can cut it off.

Tell me Ladyboy butterfly. What are you coming to Thailand for? What kind of ride will you offer?

Where have all the real men gone? The narcissism and vanity I see here is appalling.

I don't see any narcissism or vanity on this topic; just a discussion on what appeals to certain people. It was an honest question from a young man about what Thai women feel is appealing. You pretty much stated your belief (which I agree with) in your second post. It's what a man brings into the equasion that counts: is he clean, is he funny, is he interesting, can he provide enough funding (money) of offer a woman a good time.

For a short term ride a man's appearance might lack appeal to many Thai women, but once they get to know you on a more regular basis a lot of the visual appearances might be ignored. Many women (including Thais) don't like beards on men, but that doesn't mean a man with a beard is unattractive to Thai women. Most women are not so shallow as to let appearances be the only issue that counts.

Boo, Patsycat and other women all stated they like long hair... providing it is clean and well cared for. Thai women are no different. That is a far cry from some balding guy with a bit of long hair tied up in a grey pony tail.
