President Jakaya Kikwete elected for second term in Tanzania

DAR ER SALAAM, TANZANIA (BNO NEWS) -- Incumbent President Jakaya Kikwete on Friday was re-elected for a second term after obtaining 61 percent of the votes as announced by the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

The NEC also informed that the presidential elections occurred without incidents and the vote count was made without irregularities. The presidential polls were held on Sunday.

Kikwete, 60, will serve his second and last presidential term. He has been credited for impulsing the economy but opposition says that he has failed to end widespread poverty.

The Chadema Union party of the opposition candidate Wilbrod Slaa sent NEC an official letter expressing their dissatisfaction on the election results and vote counting. Chadema alleges mistakes in the election results in Hai, Ubungo and Geita.

The Tanzania Intelligence and Security Services (TISS) has refuted Slaa's claims related to claims that some of the staff were deployed to help in tampering with the results of the poll.TISS Deputy Director Jacky Zoka said the department is looking into the matter but he urged the public to ignore the allegations.

"Although it is not our duty to respond to such claims, we have felt the need to do so because of the gravity of the charges,"Zoka said. "It has dawned on us that these allegations made by Slaa are being strategically uttered to disrupt prevailing peace in the country,"
