I've done quite a few visa runs from Pattaya to Penang myself. It's not a good place for tourist visas these days, but it is a nice place to getaway to. I suggest renting a motorcycle for a day and circumnavigating the island.

Unlike the OP, I wouldn't suggest getting glasses there. I had problems with glasses that were made there and what could I do? I'm not going back to have my glasses redone. Much better off having them made locally.

Penang, not good? Used to be wonderful. A lovely Indian man used to come to the guest house/hotel, collect everyones passport , take them to the consulate , late in the afternoon and and you got your passport back the next day.in time to get the train back. Sorry , this was a long time ago.I Iiked going, because of Little India. I used to pig out on the food!! Wonderful banana leaf restaurants. Also had very good Bookshops.

Back 5 years ago they used to hand out 2 and 3 entry tourist visas like candy. Now you're lucky to get a single entry, and they won't even give you that if you've extended a previous tourist visa. I've heard the consulate is making it tougher on agents to get business done without a personal appearance from the applicant. The morning flight from Bangkok is no more.

All in all, not the best place for a visa run these days.
