Ural Airlines flight goes off the runway in central Russia

2010-11-08 15:00:36 GMT+7 (ICT)

YEKATERINBURG, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- An Airbus 321 belonging to Ural Airlines ran off the runway at Koltsovo Airport in central Russia on Saturday, the airline confirmed on Monday.

The incident happened around 4.25 a.m. local time as Ural Airlines flight 738 from Dubai was landing at Koltsovo Airport in Yekaterinburg, a major city in Russia's Sverdlovsk Oblast. The aircraft overran the runway by approximately 30 meters (32 yards).

"The cause of the incident was the unsatisfactory condition of the runway, which had clear ice on it, and that fact has been established by the board investigating the incident," according to a spokesperson for Ural Airlines.

The airline said the aircraft had received information that the runway was in a good condition, allowing it to land. "The disembarkation took place in the normal, routine way, using regular stairs, without any emergency rescue/escape procedures," the airline added.

A total of 143 passengers and eight crew members were aboard the aircraft when the incident happened, but there were no reports of injuries. There was no damage to the aircraft either.

The investigating board is continuing to investigate the incident.
