PERUGIA, ITALY (BNO NEWS) -- American student student Amanda Knox on Monday was ordered to stand trial for slandering police after claiming mistreatment from police officers during her arrest, local media reported.

Knox, 23, has been in prison for three years after he was sentenced to 26 years of imprisonment for murdering her flatmate Meredith Kercher in 2007. The new trial stemmed from Knox's allegations of mistreatment as she was taken into custody in Perugia in 2007.

"I repeat that I have always just sought to defend myself and have never offended or slandered anyone," Knox said.

Knox's parents could also face slandering charges after they repeated their daughter's claims of police mistreatment. She was sentenced last December for murdering Kercher, a British exchange student, and for defaming the owner of the bar where she worked.

Kercher's body was found semi-naked and with her throat slashed in what appeared to be a home burglary. Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 26, were later arrested for their involvement in the murder case.

Knox, Sollecito and Rudy Guede, a drifter and small-time drug dealer, started a sex game but Kercher refused to participate. Sollecito hold the victim while Knox tabbed her to death. Sollecito was later sentenced to 25 years in prison while Guede was sentenced to 16 years of imprisonment.

Knox has repeatedly claimed her innocence and her appeal against her murder conviction is scheduled for November 24 in Perugia.
