Garmin Thailand New Map Version 11 (Tsm V.11)

Featured Replies

you have teleatlas for your garmin unit?

is there some limitation about bringing say a US purchase GPS into Thailand, will it likely work properly assumign one has a Thaialand map?

garmin unit here is more expensive than tomtom , both the unit and the map is why i ask ... thanks

1. Yes I have a TeleAtlas map loaded in my nuvi 205 as back-up, Garmin City Navigator Southeast Asia NT v4.0 and v4.5 are older TeleAtlas maps. I use ESRI Thailand Street Map v11.0 as my primary map.

2. As said, Garmin currently uses NavTeq maps.

3. There is no limitation on bringing a GPS into Thailand for personal use. You of course will need a Thailand map installed.

How do you like to TSM v11 as it appears on the nuvi 3770? The map seems a little odd, but that may be entirely due to the new capacitive touch screen. Definitely can't touch individual POI on the screen. Can't make up my mind if I like it or not!

How much is TSM v11 and where can I buy it online?

If your Garmin GPS is registered with ESRI Thailand HERE then you can get TSN v11 for 450 baht from them for out of warranty units, free if still in warranty. Look under Event>Map TSM v.11.0, use Google Translate if needed. I have not seen TSM v11 advertised by retailers yet.

Unfortunately I bought it in New Zealand in 2009 and it still has the NZ map installed in the Nuvi 260W but a Rotweiler Thailand v 5.53 map on an SD card.

Dumb user question... I have a USA Garmin 205w with a SD card that holds my Thai map... How would I go about getting the new map and what is the cost?

1. Buy some software (Which Software & Where?) and load it myself.

2. Buy a new Thai Map SD Card.

3. Wander around the CM Pantip mall with my 205w and find a friendly vendor to do the upgrade for me. :whistling:

Rotweiler's All Thailand v5.53 is a perfectly good map. I have one myself. For a short stay in Thailand the Rotweiler map will be just fine, for a long-term stay I'd definitely consider getting the TSM v11. If you are handy with a computer then Google is your friend.

I'm quite impressed with the nuvi 3770. The first time I played with it for a couple of minutes, and then I had to use my iPhone. I was kind of surprised noticing that the iPhone's screen didn't look as nice as before I played with the nuvi ;)

Regarding the icons: you can still touch them and a popup will show up with the information about the POI. That is available from the map view (tap the screen while in the map mode - will switch into 2D view). Sometimes it is not an easy task to click particular icon, but you do not have to be so precise. It is enough to click the group of icons and then click again the popup. This will give you information about the other POI in that place.

The display seems clearer. I also started to learn the names of the roads I am passing every day ;)

It seems the processor is faster than in other nuvis - browsing is faster. You can make zoom IN/OUT with a touch of 2 fingers (the same like zooming in/out pictures on iPhone).

Also the screen display can rotate from horizontal to vertical view - quite nice while looking for POI or planning as can be easily hold as a mobile phone.

Bluetooth and hands-free: it does work quite well. The microphone seems to be sensitive and I'm being heard well. But I was not too happy with the speaker :/

Let me know if you have any questions or would like to see some pics comparing with other units :)

Depending where you bought the map:

If from authorized Garmin Dealer in Thailand - you could apply for an update. Otherwise, you will have to purchase a new map (2.000 THB). I don't really think you can find "a friendly" vendor who could do another kind of update ;)

If you come to Pantip Plaza, Chiang Mai (2nd floor), ask for Morris or Ae :) to help you decide :)

another dumb question

can i use one of these Esri maps on a tomtom device

how many 'maps' are there for tland anyway ?

1. I've never heard of a ESRI map being used on a TomTom. The map files won't match.

2. As for the number of Thailand maps out there, I'd say at least 10. Not all are compatible with a given GPS.

I emailed ESRI a couple of days ago and here is their reply

We have a Micro SD card the mapping data for Thailand (Thailand Street Map V.11) in order to install to your Garmin nuvi260W. (in English Version)

The price is 2,300 baht.(Vat included)

Could you please give me your serial no. is located under the barcode back of your device.

And Unit ID as following;

-press setting

-press system

-press about

You can see your unit ID.

If you are interesting in installation the Thailand Street Map V.11, we are requesting your serial number and unit ID of your device in advance to contact Garmin to obtain the unlock code of your device for loading the map in the future (For delivery the CD to your address needed to take time for 2-3 days after your order date with free of charge).

I had a problem re-loading my Rotweiler 5.53 after ESRI replaced the battery under a product recall but it is fine now.

I have used the Rotweiler for 18 months now and I am very happy with it providing that I can remember how to update the maps, but it is an operator error (me) compounded by old age. B)

hi there

Nuvi 3770 after 2 months introduction, any further news or field test report ? with TSM v11, or not ?

ESRI product info is very ambiguous, hold my feet for this B14,xxx purchase !

thanks . . .

I went to Gadget Trend. The lady asked me where I had bought my Nuvi 205. Answer - Central Bangna. Well then you have to go to ERSI at BTS Chong Nonsi. I went there & was told to leave my unit & come back in 45 minutes.

When I went back they had loaded V11 into my unit. They handed me a CD ROM & asked for 450 baht. Thanks & bye.

After two months of going back and forth with ERSI over making V11 work on my US OS 3790t.. I got them to open up.

It's a licensing issue. They didn't say directly, but if I understand correctly they must pay a licensing fee for the licensing security scheme used on the 3700 series units.

This fee, was only contracted (this time) for Thai OS units.. and won't work with English OS units.

They are in discussion on what to purchase for the next version.

I believe they really didn't know/understand they needed to buy licenses for both versions as they tried really hard and put a lot of their time and resources into trying to make it work. I think the answer surprised them.

At this point they're being open and I believe honest. You can't ask for more than that.

Concerning function.. I'm curious if I'm missing anything using V10 except for 3d building view? Is 3d terrain/topo view working on the 3770's?

I'm sure there are map updates.. but so far I haven't missed them.

Hopefully they'll get this sorted by V12. They're not at all happy how this makes them look.

The 3D terrain/topo works on the 3770, but is nothing to get excited about. You are not missing anything spectacular by not having the 3D function.

I am having a problem with a ESRI TSM v11 map and/or firmware installed on a new 215W. I wonder if that is also related to licensing issues.

ESRI Thailand Street Map v11.0 successfully downloaded from GPSsociety website. New v11.0 map is 161MB Thai, 151MB English. Significantly Improved rural road detail in the area I looked at south of Phetchabun.

IO, can I ask you what model you use and what OS is on it? I seem to remember an different thread said that the 3790T was not available in LOS yet. I can get the 3790T here in the US for about $416 and the 3760T for about $399 ... both without Thailand maps, of course.

Thanks

David

I've been in close contact with ERSI.. in fact they're using my 3790t as a test bed. The entire 3700 series will basically operate the same. Any of them will run the maps once they figure out how any of them can run the maps..;o)

At issue is Garmin's latest security protocols. Namely a MAP ID north of 2200 (the old one was 57) which requires a separate authentication file hidden in parts undisclosed.. These files will have a .gma extension and be in the /systems hidden folder of the new units.. All of this makes piracy very difficult which I'm glad to see.. and hopefully it will encourage them to drop their ridiculous JV restriction.

They tell me we'll see building 3d and terrain view and the maps will support nuRoute.. all impressive achievements.

Meanwhile...V11 works fine on the older Nuvi series.. have the new map on both my 350 and 885t with no issues. But I suspect the new major firmware/OS upgrade for these units (if they bother) will support the new security features.

I hope to have my Nuvi 3790t back tomorrow or the next day and will soon post a review on my site.

....I second that!

A little over 1 year ago after first reading this forum, I bought my first GPS unit (Nuvi 765t - USA version) and down loaded - Google was my friend :whistling: - the newly (at that time) Tsm V. 10 map.

I just 'updated' to Tsm V. 11 by repeating the same thing process. My routes and addresses seem to function as before.......I only hope this V.11 has cleared up the couple of 'mis-routing' experiences that I encountered in V.10

I can tell you they still won't be enabling Junction VIew for non-Thai OS units.

....I thought(?) I had a couple of JVC views with TSM V. 10 - while on Bkk area freeway(?)

...have you been able to get JVC to work on your 885t? What improvements have you noticed in this new TSM V. 11?

I agree its of marginal value. But I'd disagree it's even a mature product, much less very good. Have you used a recent map set in the USA or Europe? Night and day difference. Even the mapset I used in the states five years ago is far advanced (and all functions enabled like being able to enter an address, a city, adequately separating categories (restaurants, malls, and other points of interest) over the latest TSM I used. It is getting better, and I'm curious to see what people think of V11, but it severely lags current technology.. This site is pretty good for keeping abreast of what's possible. Heck, I'll be happy when they finally solve the problem so the GPS knows if you're elevated on the expressway or down below it..

....amen to that Brother!

I am using the Thai map v11 since December 2010 in my Garmin 1490T and have travelled some 10.000 km since. I must say I have never seen such a lousy map! To start with is the shown speed limit. On all highways 110 km/h even in den middle of cities or villages! This means that times are calculated incorrectly and - more important - routes based on shortest time are sometimes (i.e. from Khon Kaen to Chiang Mai) 100 km longer than the best. Thanks Buddha I know a lot of rural Thailand, would I be dependent alone on a GPS I would have been lost several times the last 2 months! I have used versions 8, 9 and 10.1 in the past and all of them with all the little and big mistakes they had were much better than v11!!!!
