A friend of our has gone one a road trip from Xishuangbanna, China to Hatyai. According to his mom, he has left Xishuangbanna on the 16th of October on a 4WD. Since then the mother has lost contact with her son and could not get in touch with him. neither did he called back. and it's nearly a month now. during that time, none of us are aware that there is a serious flood going around in north thailand. as he did not informed his mom on which route he will be using, we are pretty clueless where he might get stuck at. am wondering if anyone from this forum knows which route are usually used to travel from china to thailand and how is the flood situation like now in thailand? is communication still down at this time? his mom is very worried about her only son and we are doing our part to help source for more information on where he might be now.

Hi, I can only give some information on the Thailand sector but I guess it is a start. Their has been some minor flooding in North Thailand, widespread flooding in Central Thailand and a serious flood in parts of the South including Hat Yai city. Though 150 people have died in floods in the last month or so, the flooding has generally not been life threatening unless risks have been taken by entering flood waters. Highways generally have remained open.

The wet season in Laos may have made some roads impassable. I don't know. One site that has information about road travel in Thailand and countries North from Chiang Mai is http://www.gt-rider.com/thailand-motorcycle-forum/

The normal crossing point from China to Laos would be in the far NW at Mohan to Boten, then through Luang Nam Tha down to Ban Houei Xay (Sai) on the Mekong River. Cross over to Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, then start driving on south. It's possible to bypass Bangkok and continue on south.

I'd thing the first place to check would be Thai Immigration to see if there's a record of the guy crossing into Thailand, and probably at Chiang Khong where there's a vehicle ferry.

Be best, obviously, if the family has his passport number.
