UN High Commissioner to visit Bolivia to asses human rights situation

2010-11-11 05:15:55 GMT+7 (ICT)

UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Wednesday announced that he will be traveling to Bolivia later this week to asses the human rights situation with government officials.

Pillay will visit Bolivia from Friday to Tuesday and will also discuss progress and issues of concern in the South American nation with officials and representatives of the legislature, judiciary and civil society.

The visit of Pillay comes after a recent agreement with the Bolivian government which extends the presence of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for an additional three years, until 2013.

The OHCHR in Bolivia was set up in 2007 to provide assistance to State institutions and civil society organizations, promote human rights, and monitor and report on the status of human rights in Bolivia.

The aim of the visit of the High Commissioner is to see first-hand the current dynamics in the country in relation to human rights, including progress and specific issues of concern, examining ways in which OHCHR in Bolivia can provide further support and advice.

Pillay will meet with Bolivian President Evo Morales, Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca, Justice Minister Nilda Copa Condori and other senior government officials, as well as representatives of the National Assembly and the Judiciary.
