Obama renews longstanding sanctions against Iran

2010-11-11 06:15:17 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday renewed long-standing U.S. financial sanctions against Iran by extending a 'national emergency' declared in 1979.

Obama's declaration on Wednesday was expected as the sanctions - which involve certain frozen Iranian assets - have to be extended annually to prevent them from expiring automatically.

"Because our relations with Iran have not yet returned to normal, and the process of implementing the January 19, 1981, agreements with Iran is still underway, the national emergency declared [..] must continue in effect beyond November 14, 2010," Obama said in a message to Congress.

The 'national emergency' was first declared by President Jimmy Carter on November 14, 1979 after the beginning of the Iranian hostage crisis in which 52 U.S. citizens were held hostage for 444 days.

Obama said the executive order was meant to 'deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat' to national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States as a result of the situation in Iran.
