Facebook may launch new e-mail service

2010-11-16 00:08:57 GMT+7 (ICT)

PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- Social networking giant Facebook is expected to announce on Monday its launching of an e-mail service.

What some media outlets are dubbing as the "Gmail killer," Facebook is expected to show off a much-speculated web-based email client during Monday's special event.

Facebook's large networking market could expand dramatically with its announcement, as it is already known for inserting content and games almost unnoticeably.

As of July, Facebook had more than 500 million active users, which is about one person for every fourteen in the world

Speculation mounts as Facebook prepares for event

SAN FRANCISCO – Facebook is holding a mysterious event Monday in San Francisco.

An e-mailed invitation sent to journalists and bloggers says only "please join us for an invite-only event." But blogs have been buzzing with speculation, a big one being that Facebook will announce an e-mail service, its answer to Google's Gmail.

That's in part because the invite is reminiscent of the old-school, red, white and blue "air mail" envelopes.

If that's true, it could spell trouble for Google Inc. and other e-mail service providers. Facebook and Google already compete for Internet users' eyeballs and the advertising dollars that follow them.

The event comes a day before Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.
