Israeli air strike kills two alleged terrorists in Gaza Strip

2010-11-18 00:41:54 GMT+7 (ICT)

GAZA STRIP (BNO NEWS) -- An Israeli air strike on Wednesday killed two individuals who were members of a Palestinian terror group in northern Gaza Strip, officials and local media reported.

The joint operation was conducted by local security forces and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and targeted the vehicle of an Army of Islam official, Islam Yassin, who was killed in the strike along his brother Mohammed Yassin.

Yassin was a senior member of the radical Palestinian terrorist organization affiliated with al-Qaeda. He was personally involved in the 2006 kidnapping of Gilad Schalit. He was also responsible for planning terror attacks on Israelis in the Sinai area.

Initially it was reported that a car exploded and killed two Palestinians and injured three others. It was later revealed that the incident was caused by an air strike from IDF.

The Israeli forces subsequently confirmed the targeted assassination of Islam Yassin who was considered the right hand of Army of Islam commander Mumtaz Durmish.

The attack was confirmed by Gaza's Hamas-run Interior Ministry that indicated that an Israeli warplane had struck the car, and identified its occupants as members of the Army of Islam, a radical Islamic group.

Israel resumed its targeted assassinations in the Gaza Strip two weeks ago. The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) confirmed that together with the Israel Air Force carried an operation that killed a senior al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist.

A top operative with the Army of Islam, 27-year-old Mohammed Namnam, was killed when his car was hit by an Israeli air-to-ground missile. Namnam was also involved in the 2006 abduction of Gilad Schalit.
