Germany's interior minister calls for calm after terror threat

HAMBURG, GERMANY (BNO NEWS) -- Germany's interior minister Thomas de Maiziere on Thursday called citizens for calm after acknowledging that there are concrete indications of a terror attack in Germany.

The German government also urged citizens not to let the recent terror alerts affect their daily lives. The announcement came on the same day that a suspected bomb was found on a plane headed to Munich in Namibia.

The suspicious package was discovered prior to loading at the luggage screening point at Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport, the main international airport of Namibia. It was set to go aboard an Air Berlin aircraft, which was scheduled to fly to Munich in Germany.

"International terrorism aims to spread fear in our country. This we will not allow," the Interior Minister said. "We ask all citizens to continue living their lives as before, without fear, in peaceful cooperation with one another and heightened vigilance for one another."

On Wednesday, de Maiziere said that security officials in Germany and abroad gathered information that an terrorist attack is being planned and reportedly will take place by the end of November. The minister admitted that for the first time there are concrete investigation leads and causes for concern.

"We will show strength and will not allow ourselves to be intimidated," de Maizière on Wednesday. "We will not allow international terrorism to limit our lifestyles nor our culture of freedom."

As consequence, Germany is on high alert and security has been increased at airports and train stations. The United States informed the German government that between two to four al-Qaeda militants were on their way to Berlin and the United Kingdom with the intent to perpetrate terrorist attacks.

The head of Germany's police union, Konrad Freiberg, criticized the government for not preparing the citizens sufficiently ahead of the probable terror attacks. Freiberg added that there are serious security deficits and that more efforts must be taken to protect the public from risk.

The package was a dummy, made in the USA.

A dummy bomb that sparked an international terror alert was made by an 80-year-old woman in California and ended up discarded in a Namibia airport because of "a boo-boo," NBC News reported Friday.

The device — part of a "modular bomb set" or MBS, which is used for X-ray and physical/bag search training — was manufactured by a "mom and pop" machine shop in Sonora called Larry Copello Inc. four to five years ago.

The owner, Larry Copello, told NBC News that his then-80-year-old grandmother had completed it, doing the wiring and fitting Velcro attachments.
