GREYMOUTH, NEW ZEALAND (BNO NEWS) -- All 29 miners who have been trapped underground in a New Zealand mine for five days are believed to have been killed, police said on Wednesday.

Police superintendent Gary Knowles made the emotional announcement to reporters after a second blast had rocked the Pike River Coal mine. Officials believe that if the miners were still alive, they would have been unable to survive the second blast.
