November 26, 201015 yr I will be coming to Bkk in a few weeks. As wine is so expensive I was thinking of bringing a couple of bottles from home and putting it in my luggage. I am already aware the official rule is 1 litre of alcohol. Now I am trying to way up my options. If I declare the wine how is the duty and tax calculated? How will they know the original cost of the wine before they start adding percent tax etc? I am thinking that if I bring a receipt from home for some cheap but decent wine it may work out cheaper than buying from tops or wherever. The other option is to just not declare it. How are the fines calculated? has anyone been questioned over this before? Thanks
November 26, 201015 yr There is no way to legally bring in more than one litre. You cannot pay additional duties. They often don't worry about it, but when they do decide it's an issue they can make a very expensive deal about it.
November 26, 201015 yr Tops does it. So clearly there is a way. It may not be practival / feasible for mere mortals, but there is clearly a way to do it.
November 26, 201015 yr I always come back here with over my limit of booze. Not by much, but for sure a few extra bottles. Luckily, I have not had a problem yet...but again, only a few bottles over. One of the biggest complaints I have about Thailand is the expense of wine and good booze! Ridiculous to pay 500B for a bottle of cheap wine that hasn't even been transported properly....
