Extend A Non-Imm O-A Retirement Visa For An American

Can I go to get the extension (using the bank balance method) a week before my current expiration date? 2 weeks? Only a day or so?

What is the 'rule'? I'd LIKE to get it done as soon as possible.

This will be my second extension.

That's ALL I am asking. Not asking how to do it.
