Registering Baby Birth

Hi all,

Could you please offer me some advice on procedures in Thailand for registering births. My son was born yesterday in Thailand.

Unfortunatley I will not be able to get to Thailand until January 2011 (but am working on going earlier).

My girlfriend is very worried and she said that I need to get there before 12 December 2010 to make the certificate because the Doctor at her hospital where she gave birth told her it is very difficult to register later than this.

I'd really appreciate some advice on this guys.

The birth registration document that is issued by the hospital is probably the most important document in that any mistakes, errors and omissions cannot be rectified after it is issued. So, assuming that you are non- Thai and unable to be there personally, I strongly recommend that you get a clear scan of your passport and send that to your girlfriend so that there's no mistakes in getting the parents (your) names correctly translated from (I assume) English. Not knowing where in Thailand this birth is being registered, it would be handy if your wife could get this passport scan translated into Thai by a certified translator. This will avoid the hospital staff having a 'guess' at the literal phonetic translation of foreign names. I used the passport translation from when we were married to make sure there was no differences between my name as stated as spouse and my name as stated as the father. Since you aren't married, I would suggest keeping this certified translation as a reference for future paperwork.

Hi You have to go to the British Embassy in Bangkok and register the babys birth there with them, you can apply for a passport at the same time.

When my daughter was born I was named on the birth certificate as the Father and my name was given to the baby,

The hospital did not require it to be translated in to thia.

Therefore my daughters birth certificate states her name as

ALECIA PLAIFON ATKINSON.

MOTHER

KINGFA KHETCHANGRIT

FATHER

PAUL ATKINSON

When you apply at bankgkok it is VITAL that you have your correct birth certificate this is the LONG one not the short one, they will not register the birth without the LongOne.

I dont know what her doctor is talking about or what certificate she is refering to i.e.

I can only presume they are talking about the birth certificate from the hospital, I cant remember if i needed to sign any docs at the hospital, this is what she most likely is worried about, and they will obviously requie a name for the child.

First of all, congratulations! The birth of the baby must be reported within 15 days at the amphur. However, doing it late carries a fine of 500 baht.

Normally the hospital can also do it, or somebody alse like a family member.

The important thing is to give your wife a copy of your passport and have your name translated in Thai. As the birth certificate is in Thai, your name will be registered in Thai. if you already have an official Thai document with your name in Thai, like a work permit, copy your name from that.

You write girlfriend, meaning that you are not married. Under Thai law you will have to recognise the child as yours to become the legal father. This has to be done by petitioning the court. Right now the mother will be considered to have sole custody, with you having no rights until you have legitimised the baby.

Contrary to what paulacky writes you don't have to have the birth registered at the British Embassy, not even to get a British passport.

The only reason to do so is that if you lose the original birth certificate it may be much easier to get a copy from the UK register of Births Marriages and Deaths through your Embassy where ever in the world you are, than from the Thai authorities (as in this case) or whatever country your child was born in, especially if neither of you are a citizen of that country.

On september 2nd of this year. my girlfriend had a baby in kk... i was not there for the birth..

as my son come early, to clear up something for you....i did get there inside the time given to register my son at the local amphur...( after 14days of the birth a fine is issued if still not registed.)

the thing i want to make clear is...... you can give your son your surname.....

i went to register my sons birth with my gf... and the boss at amphur said cannot give farangs surname if not married.....

i thought about this........hmmmm

so i decided to call my embassy (aus) just to check......if the local amphur is right.....

so is what happen was the thai lady at my embassy said 'yes' can give farang name on the birth paper...

i told her what the amphur said... she said they follow old school rules.... because they not follow or maybe not know the new laws...??

she then spoke to the boss at amphur..although he was not happy about it... my son was given my surname.. not my girlfriends..

after more paper work and my thumb print we where give the birth paper....

the point i am trying to get across.... always check with your embassy about the rules when your girl is having a baby in thailand...

as once the birth paper is issued its very hard to change back...

I'm inclined to think that the Amphur was right about the refusal. Technically speaking a child can only have a foreign name if one of the parents is a foreigner. I presume you didn't legitimise the child, (for that you would have to go to court), making you not the legal father and thus the child can only have a Thai name.

In practise the amphur will give a child the foreign name of the person who is claimed to be the father and your example is the first refusal I heard of. But as said, I'm not sure if it would be legal when the father has not legitimised the child.

1. Yes, you need to translate the babies name and your names in Thai. The Thai birth certificate is only in Thai! (To use it with your own country you will need to have it legalised and translated).

2. None, unless you are yourself on the household book and want to add the name of the child to it.

3. You register the birth of the baby at the amphur (district office) of the district where the child was born.

4. registration is free, unless you report after 15 days of the birth than you get fined 500 baht. (a copy of the birth certificate might cost something like 20 tot 50 baht)

One more question ...

I've read abt required Documents and they are

1. The House Registration Certificate (House Owner's copy).

2. The Identification Card of the person notifying the birth / The Identification Cards of the father and mother (if available).

3. Birth Certification from the hospital (If available).

No.2 means our passports and 3 is doc from hospital.

For no.1, If we rent a house, does it means rental contract with father or mother name?

No, it is not the rental contract. It is a register of the people who officially live at that house. Normally people need it to register the child on the house hold registraton, for which you need the permisison (and house hold book) from the owner. But most foreigners are not on a house hold registration and for a foreign child it doesn't matter. If you have it, you can take it with you. If not it should not be a problem.

Hi All,

I would like to register my childs birth to my G/F from Thailand We are not married but my name is on the Thai birth cert. I am a UK national and would like to do this in bangkok. My question is the process from here, forms, office to register in Bangkok and paperowrk, documents required?

If you are talking about registering with the UK embassy and getting a UK passport, the embassy has a website giving details and forms.

Note that you are not the legal father under Thai law and the mother has sole custody. To change that you need to get a lawyer and go to court to be recognized as the father (or marry the mother).
