Bomb blast kills two children in southern Afghanistan

KABUL (BNO NEWS) -- Two children were killed and another was injured on Monday when a bomb exploded in southern Afghanistan, according to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

ISAF said the improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in the Panjwayi disstrict of Kandahar province, killing two children and wounding a third. An Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol responded to the scene of the blast to investigate the incident and treated the wounded child on site.

"The kids in this country are innocent witnesses to insurgent acts of terror and it’s a shame they are continuously on the wrong end of these indiscriminate attacks," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command’s Combined Joint Operations Center director. "Our thoughts and concerns are with the victims’ families."

Torres said ISAF will work with Afghan authorities to find those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice. "The people of Afghanistan deserve opportunity to live in a country that’s free of the destruction caused by IEDs," Torres added.

IEDs are the main cause of coalition casualties in Afghanistan.
