SEOUL (BNO NEWS) -- South Korea's artillery in response to a sudden attack by the North last week left one North Korean officer killed, the Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday.

Choi Sung-yong, the head of a group of relatives of South Koreans kidnapped by North Korea, told reporters in Seoul that he obtained intelligence that one North Korean officer had been killed while two soldiers were wounded when South Korean artillery struck North Korea.

It is the first word of casualties in North Korea since the violence last week, which began last Tuesday at around 2.30 p.m. local time when the North started firing nearly 200 artillery shells near the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong. Some of the shells struck the island itself.

On the South Korean island, two soldiers and two civilians were killed while 19 others were injured. South Korea quickly responded with its own artillery fire.
