U.S. disappointed with the results of Egypt’s parliamentary elections

2010-12-01 02:27:32 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- The White House on Tuesday said it is disappointed with the results of Egypt's parliamentary elections that are marred with fraud allegations.

According to National Security Council (NSC) spokesman Mike Hammer, the Obama Administration is also concerned about the conduct during and leading up to the November 28 legislative elections.

"The numerous reported irregularities at the polls, the lack of international monitors and the many problems encountered by domestic monitors, and the restrictions on the basic freedoms of association, speech and press in the run-up to the elections are worrying," said Hammer.

Egypt's parliamentary elections were labeled as invalid by opposition parties as the results indicated that very few opposition candidates earned seats and no one from the Muslin Brotherhood group was elected.

In the previous parliamentary elections the Muslim Brotherhood won 88 seats, about a fifth of the parliament and thus gaining majority.. However, the ruling National Democratic Party and government said that the Brotherhood was an illegal group and prevented them participating openly in the polls.

Candidates related to the Muslim Brotherhood had to run as independents. The NDP ruling party won 170 seats while the opposition only won a handful of seats. Opposition parties, like the liberal Ghad party, called on Egyptians to reject the results.
