Jetski Deaths

Featured Replies

I understand two Chinese tourists were killed at Patong this morning when they collided with a catamaran sailed by an expat.

The tourists, a married couple, apparently tried to go between the two hulls of the cat.

The incident occured close to an anchored cruise ship.

This should reignite the whole jetski safety debate.

RIP

Very sad to hear things like this , unfortunately most people have no experience on these skis , this adds to the 2 deaths in the past few months in Pattaya also.

RIP

Sad!

Here on Samui/Chaweng beach there is hardly a day passing where the Jet ski rental crews are not in some sort of dispute with customers about payments for "damage", another thing is that there is a reef, which is covered at high tide, no markers, no buoys, nothing to warn about the reef, so accidents and damage to the jet ski's are pre-programmed... any further comments are superfluous! :whistling:

I think people constantly underestimate the power and speed of big skis. They wouldn't climb on an R1 with no experience, yet they see a jetski as a toy suitable for begginers, which they are not.

This may sound heartless, but if someone had to die, I would rather it was the jetski operator and not an inoccent, boater or swimmer. :(

I talk to the jet ski guys on Surin beach, they complain nobody is renting. I asked them if they had any idea of how bad their reputation is and how they are portrayed on the internet. They are totally clueless about what has been going on. I told them about JJ but they said he was "old news" I asked them if they knew he wasn't even a Thai yet had ruined everybodies reputation with his boorish behaviour. Basically they are just trying to make an earn, they said not to judge everybody on what happens in Patong and I said fair enough. I told them people online actually think they are a mafia like group. They were perplexed and I doubt they can even comprehend the power of the internet and how fast bad news spreads. The jet ski deaths were on Thai TV before making it here. Pretty tragic really.

Sniff. I feel very close to those guys in this low business time.

They tried to go between the hulls of a catamaran!!??

Am I the only one who thinks the cause of death was stupidity?

I very much doubt that was their intention initialy. The speed at which they move, it takes no more than a couple of seconds to go from having the time of your life to being dead. I doubt they new much about it. I would have thought, for them the boat came out of nowhere.

I agree though. Their cause of death was stupidity. They were stupid enough not to know their own capabilities and the capabilites of the machine.

Like I said before, at least they didn't take anyone with them.

I was actually looking out to sea round about the time of this incident this morning, and did see a sailing vessel out behind the cruise ship. Don't know if it was the cat involved, but likely.

A rain storm went through the bay from north to south about the same time, visibility wasn't good for a while.

Reportedly the wife was found with the jetski keys in/on hand although the husband was driving when they left the beach.

So the more experienced/confident one, took the jetski out, and then handed it over to his partner for a go, once out at sea. Could well have been her first ever go on a jetski. Very sad.

so will the jet ski guy go after the expat for damage to his jet ski?
