Anybody have any idea where in CM you can see a selection of good quality (stone/silver/gold) rosary beads or chaplets, bracelets or one decades. Not too worried if it is Thai orientated just want to see a good selection of good quality stuff. Even good qulity handicraft stuff would be nice to see.

Have wondered through some of the evangelical/baptist/christian/fundamentalists shops around born again type shops around Wat Ket but have been kindly advised that "no have" at least, and my interests described as graven idolatory worship at worse. Hopefully Jesus still wants me for a sunbeam.

Not seen anything in Warrot gold wise at all...and no luck with silver either.

I have seen some cheapies at Sacred Heart but I want this as a present for a very dear friend so looking for something nicer and/or more memorable.

You could look at the many silver shops south of the old city on Wulai Rd. Sorry, I'm not someone who uses rosary beads, so they're not really on my "shopping radiar".

There are some bead shops on Loh Kroh Rd. Is this something you can make yourself?

Many thanks Nancy.

You can make them yourselves after buying the beads but I am afraid that many years ago my artcistic endevours faltered after failing PlayDoh101. Also wanted something much nicer that I can envisage let alone make.

Will check out the Wulai as you have suggested. Thanks again.

I think the rosary beads you saw at the Sacred Heart Cathedral are manufactured in a workshop on Suthep Rd. I don't know where abouts on Suthep Rd, but whoever does the ordering for the cathedral shop would presumably know. Then you could go up there and get a custominsed order made up - or you could take a cheap rosary and as Nancy L suggestes take it to the silversmiths on Wualai Rd. It might be also worth asking around at Seven Fountains Jesuit centre on Huay Kaew Rd (almost opposite the main entrance to Chiang Mai University) . Fr Vinai who is Thai but speaks good English, may be able to point you in the right direction as might the Fr superior, Fr David who is a Brit who has lived in Chiang Mai for nearly 20 years.

I must admit, I chuckled at the thought of you approaching the Evangelicals for Roasry beads!! They think of RC's as being pretty well irredeemable!!

Sawasdee Khrup, Khun MamboRobert,

Assuming you don't require beads specifically from a Christian organization, or specifically made (blessed ?) to be a Roman Catholic rosary, there are a couple of bead shops which have many selections available.

1. Loy Kroh : go down the street running behind Le Meridien ... as if you are headed down to the main area of the Night Bazaar ... headed North ... just opposite the Centara/Duangtawan Hotel: about three shops down on the left from Loy Kroh is a gigantic bead shop with beads from all over Asia. And wire, and string of all types. Bet they have silver beads, also, but not sure.

2. Carrefour: in the entry level ground floor is a lady with a small "stall" with a variety of beads, small stone objects, jade, sometimes small Buddha images; she's quite friendly, and could custom-make you a rosary from your choice of beads.

3. Airport Plaza second floor : across from the entrance to the Northern Thai Pavillion, a free-standing booth where a pair of very creative young Thai men make all kinds of necklaces, and have many types of beads. But, they are more oriented towards ladies' high fashion, ioho.

If you are not adverse to the idea of using a wooden bead rosary of the Buddhist type (108 beads), you can find those in stalls along the Night Bazaar, or in Talat Wararot: you could dis-assemble one of those, and use the number of beads of your choice. They come with small beads, large beads, etc. They are very lightweight which is handy. In Sanskrit these would be called a 'Mala: not sure what they are called in Pali or Thai.

good luck, ~o:37;
