When Can She Work?

Featured Replies

Well, hopefully the gf get's her fiancee visa soon, come's to the UK and we get married.

When is she legally allowed to work?

I'm pretty sure it's as soon as we get married, but in the "real world" will we have to wait until she get's her new FLR? Doesn't the stamp say something about legally entitled to work? And how long does it take to process the application?

Do employers ask to see her passport? Or will a marriage certificate do until she get's her passport back with the new visa?

It's just my gf want's to apply for some jobs now, but it's pointless if she can't start work until we get FLR.

Hi your future wife will Not be allowed to work until she gets FLR On her Marriage Visa it will state No Work or recourse to public funds when she gets FLR it only states No recourse to public funds so until she has FLR No employer would be in a position to employ her

Best wishes for your wedding

Thanks for your best wishes. How long does it take to process a FLR application?

My wife's FLR took about 4 months to process.

Hi raz Sorry I cant answer that my wife returned to Thailand after our marriage and applied for settlement in Thailand It would have been easier in the UK. But family matters meant she had to return for a year.

I don't think it will take 13 weeks that it took to get it in Thailand.

On reflection it would have been better to have got married in Thailand rather than pay for two visas. having said that she was able to see life in the UK

and yes her first visit was in winter and she did experience snow but only a little, Nothing like we got over the last week.. Be prepared to get her some warm clothes My wife just told her family it was -17 Deg here in the UK last week they said its only 19 in Thailand

My wife said you know 0 well go down Ha Ha

Really? That long? Is it quicker if you go in person and pay the extra money for the premium service?

But am I right in that she can legally work as soon as we are married? If she can she apply for a NI number then I suppose she can get a job?

EDIT- Just looked at the FLR(M) form here:

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/applicationforms/flr/formflrm1020091.pdf

Section 8 asks if the applicant is working...so surely she can work before she get's FLR?

We did the premium service for the FLR(M) in Liverpool and the whole process was very quick and easy, in and out in about 2 hours.

The only documents they asked to see was the application form, marriage certificate and either 6 months bank statements or pay slips no fuss whats so ever and no waiting around to find out if she has been granted it or not.

I would recommend doing it if you want your GF to get work asap and you have the extra money for it.

I did a bit more reading, so as I understand it you just book an appointment turn up with the documents and pay the money? Do they then stamp her passport and she's good to go?

Well worth paying the £800 if that's the case.

Although, I can't believe they offer the "Super Premium" for £15k though! :o

My wife also did the FLR(M) premium service in Sheffield, and we will do it again when its time for ILR

Well worth the money!

She then applied for her NI Number,. Went along for the interview to prove her identity etc, then started work the following week!

Pretty much yes.

You first go into a room where they check that your application form is filled in correct and check your supporting documents , then you go into a bigger room where you pay the fee and receive a number.

when your number is called you go to another window and hand over your application and documents, a couple of standard questions are asked which YOU can answer for your wife as you go to the window together.

She will then have her biometric data taken and called back to the window where they give her all the documents back and issue her with a letter from the home office saying she is allowed to work etc.

You dont get a stamp in her passport she will get a identity card for foreign nationals ( ICFN ) which is a residence permit.

The card should be sent to you in about 1 weeks time.
