So What'S This Wee Beastie?

Featured Replies

I snapped this caterpillar as it walked across the reception in my hotel this morning.

Prior to curling up, I'd say it was about 10cm in length, as thick as one of my fingers.

The large black 'eyes' are not eyes but black patches which are presumably to make it look more fierce to predators.

Does anyone know what butterfly or moth this is going to transform into - my Thai staff also wanted to know if it tastes good with sticky rice?

Simon

Hey Simon! I think you might get better replies in this forum: Plants, Pets & Vets in Thailand.

And I am sure the answer from any Issan person would be "arroy, with hot sauce and sticky lice". Of would that be "rice".

Topic moved.

I can't answer your question, but I remember us seeing one of his cousins coming up out of the shower drain at a hotel in Songkhla several years back. It happened to be in a none-to-prosperous hotel my Thai friend insisted we stay in to save money, and after he saw that little bugger even he wanted to change hotels. :-)

it's a Hawkmoth caterpillar. unfortunately, it's absolutely boring as a moth.

here are some pics of the last few that came through town:
