Embankments

BMA to sandbag Chao Phya

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will build temporary embankments along the Chao Phya River using 1.7 million sandbags, Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said yesterday.

The embankments should be ready by September 15, he said, adding that they were an anti-flood measure in case runoff water from floods in the North reaches the capital.

There is also a plan to construct a permanent embankment along the remaining 18.8-kilometre riverside stretch in Bangkok, with the bid process currently under way, he said. Temporary embankments are needed for that stretch, Apirak said.

THE SUKHOTHAI GOVERNOR HAS WARNED THE PUBLIC NOT TO BE RELAXED ABOUT THE APPROACHING WATER FROM THE NORTH

The Sukhothai governor has ordered all parties to jointly protect against water overflowing riverbanks. Meanwhile, he has warned the public not to be relaxed, and prepare to move personal property up to higher ground, in fear of flooding.

Sukhothai Governor Sukit Charoenratanakul (สุกิจ เจริญรัตนกุล) has held a meeting with related civil agencies to prepare for the water flowing from Phrae province into Sukhothai. The water was expected to reach the province at 10 pm last night, based on measurements of the water flow, which measured 12 cubic meters per second at 4 pm yesterday.

As for preventive measures, all agencies: central, regional, and local, have been told to collaborate in preventing water from flooding into markets. This was to be done by protecting the weak points along the Yom (ยม) River with sandbags, to increase the heights of the banks and exceed previous years' heights. This, according to the governor, was expected to hold the water in.

However, the Sukhothai governor had ordered all parties to make early preparations, and warned the public in Sukhothai not to be relaxed and prepare themselves to move their personal property to higher ground.
