ANTIOQUIA, COLOMBIA (BNO NEWS) -- Rescue crews on Tuesday announced that they have recovered 36 bodies while there are still 88 missing people still following the devastating landslide in the northwestern region of Colombia.

Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos visited the area and urged authorities to fasten the evacuation as the risk still remains. Santos assessed the rescue efforts and declared that it was "an announced tragedy."

"To all the inhabitants of this high-risk zone I urged you to evacuate the area as soon as possible, said President Santos. "I have been informed that there are sites that are at risk of suffering something similar like Sunday’s. Let’s evacuate and protect the life of our citizens."

Santos also remarked that even though there is little chance of finding survivors, rescue efforts will continue every day, every hour, until the last body is recovered. He added that his government is planning constructing around 1,000 houses in Bello, the affected community.

On Sunday, at around 4 p.m. local time, around 50,000 square meters of land buried La Gabriela neighborhood in Bello, which is slightly north of Medellin, Colombia.

The affected area is located on the slopes of a mountain on a highway that connects Bogota and Medellin. Around 15 families were evacuated and taken to temporary camps, while several other residents have moved to friends' and family members' houses.

As Colombia has been facing the heaviest rainfall in 40 years, at least 176 have died in the South American country due to heavy rains and landslides so far this year.
