WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- Aviation research firm OAG on Thursday said that global airline capacity has increased 40 percent over the last ten years as it recorded a further 6 percent rise in December 2010.

The total number of seats worldwide were 311.7 million scheduled for December. According to OAG, the number of flights has increased by 24 percent in the last decade.

"Passenger confidence is growing, along with the economy, and while some regions' growth, like the Americas and Europe, are mirroring the modest improvements in the economic environment, many are growing at a striking rate," said Peter von Moltke, UBM Aviation CEO. "Africa, Asia Pacific and the Middle East all continue to show a large appetite for air travel."

Regional increases over the past decade include a 130 percent increase in capacity, and 140 percent increase in frequency in travel to and from Africa. The Middle East recorded increases of 176 percent in capacity and 188 percent in frequency.

Travel to and from Asia Pacific increased 88 percent in capacity and 109 percent in frequency. Europe registered a 72 increase in capacity and 82 increase in frequency. The growth in Europe is not as impressive as in other regions but it is still strong.

The recent developments in global economy have impacted passenger demand for travel with positive growth in all regions with the exception of travel to and from America. Double-digit increases were also experienced in capacity to and from Africa (11 percent), Asia (12 percent) and the Middle East (13 percent).

The data is included in the December 2010 edition of OAG FACTS (Frequency And Capacity Trend Statistics), a monthly report that uses interactive graphs to display performance trends of specific airports, routes, countries or regions, sourced from OAG's consolidated database of global airline schedules.
