CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Six people were killed on early Thursday on a highway in Chihuahua state in northern Mexico, the Chihuahua state Attorney General's Office said.

The six men were found lined up on the kilometer 10 of the Chihuahua-Cuauhtemoc highway. The deceased were apparently killed by a firing squad of an unknown number of individuals, AG's office spokesman Carlos Gonzalez said.

The victims were traveling in a Chevrolet red pick-up truck when they were intercepted by a group of armed men who directed them towards the fence of a local construction machinery and heavy equipment company.

Five of the bodies were found lined up while the sixth was found a few meters away. Authorities believe that the man tried top run for his life but was gunned down on the side of the road.

The highway was closed as law enforcement officials examined the scene and recovered evidence. The pick-up truck was found in the spot as well as ammunition clips and used bullets from diverse calibers.

Federal police forces arrived later to the crime scene in order to take over the investigation.

Mexico's northern state of Chihuahua has been one of the most affected by murders and violence related to drug-trafficking groups. Ciudad Juarez is known as the deadliest city in the nation.
