PM satisfied with Sunday by-elections; results don’t reflect trend of general election

BANGKOK, Dec 12 - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday said he is satisfied with the by-election in five constituencies of five provinces but said the Sunday election result cannot be an index of the general election as Thailand’s political circumstances are quite in fluid.

The prime minister made his remarks as polling in the five constituencies closed at 3pm with no significant problems or violence reported.

As Bangkok Constituency 2 by-election experienced a lower-than-expected voter turnout, the premier said he has worried about the poor turnout since the beginning as both the advance and regular election dates fell on long holidays (Dec 4-6 and Dec 10-12).

Mr Abhisit however said he believes the Sunday by-election results will not be indicative of the outcome of next year’s general election due to different conditions and the dynamism of the Thai political arena.

The overall situation of the by-election is satisfying, he said. Although vote buying was reported in some areas, no violence was reported and when a state of emergency is lifted, the situation will improve gradually.

Bangkok Election Commission member Supoj Paiboon reported that voter turnout for the Constituency 2 by-election was less than 40 per cent due to the long holiday and the announcement of the prime minister that the general election could be held in March or April next year.

Mr Supoj said no irregularities or election law violations were are reported and the by-election result could be officially forwarded to the EC headquarters on Monday.

Sunday’s by-elections were held in Bangkok’s Constituency 2, in three northeastern provinces -- Khon Kaen’s Constituency 2, Nakhon Ratchasima’s Constituency 6 and Surin’s Constituency 3 -- and in the central province of Ayutthaya’s Constituency 1.

The five seats were vacated when the Election Commission (EC) ruled that former MPs were disqualified for holding shares in firms with state concessions as they had violated the Constitution.

Today’s unofficial results will be known at about 8pm and if no complaints on irregularities are lodged the EC said it could officially announce names of the winner within a week. (MCOT online news)
