BRUHL, GERMANY (BNO NEWS) -- Three people are missing after an explosion destroyed a home in western Germany on Saturday evening, police said on Sunday.

The explosion happened shortly before 6.30 p.m. local time in the city of Brühl, located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Cologne. A family was inside the semi-detached house, which collapsed as a result of the blast.

"At the moment, three people are still missing. They are believed to be in the house," a police spokesperson said, adding that a son of the family was rescued from the rubble and transported to an area hospital for treatment.

"The rescue of human life by the fire department has the highest priority," the spokesman added. It was not immediately clear what may have caused the explosion.
