Molasses Pricing?

Featured Replies

Any suggestion where to find reasonable priced light molasses in Chiang Mai?

Reason for the interested is I noticed my 19 baht bottle of black soy sauce formula 5 contains 70% molasses. Thinking of trying a small batch of gingerbread with a hint of soy, though I doubt it'll be worth the savings. But you don't know till you try.

I only seem to use molasses for Christmas baking so the high price isn't a big deal. I have shopped at Kasam, Bakermart, Yok, Rimping, and Makro; Kasam sells pint sized individually bottled molasses (and corn syrup) sparing the expensive of the 4 liter jugs sold else where.

My favorite gingerbread recipe,

10 c all purpose flour

2 Tbsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp cloves 1 tsp ginger

1 tsp salt

1 1/2 c vegetable shortening(no substitte)

1 1/2c white sugar

1c light corn syrup

1 c light molasses

1/4 warmwater

mix together dry stuff...Beat sugar and shortening .....add syrup andmolasses and beat till fluffy...Add dry one cup at a time ...after 3 cups add water .beat. then rest of dry . gather together and wrap and leave for 1 hour or put in fridge but bring to room temp to use. We make day, even a week in advance, and keep in the fridge until we are ready to use.

Best Regards,

Kev

Perfect! I'd like to get some in bulk for making compost.

Thaank you kindly. :wai:

Take a look at all the sugars in your recipe.

1 1/2c white sugar

1c light corn syrup

1 c light molasses

Sulfur in molasses; possibility of mercury in the corn syrup.

Plus refined white sugar.

Seems like a waste of refining, when it is ll remixed again.

Go buy some cheep and easily available dark brown sugar, which has molasses naturally in it, and use it for all measurements (total 3 1/2 cups, packed) and see how that works out for you. I've tried this in other recipes with mighty fine results.
