Insurance For Possessions Inside Condo

Featured Replies

I live in Thailand on a tourist visa so even though I never leave the country I'm not really an inhabitant. I would like an insurance not for my condo itself since I'm just a tenant but for theft of my stuff like the pc, clothes, tv, whatever they might want to take.

Where do I go and what does an insurance against theft costs, is it even possible as a tourist and can the companies be trusted?

Thai Visa Brokers offer a dedicated Condo insurance which can be just for 'contents' For an on-line quote please go HERE

Important : do check to make sure the Owner has the interior of the condo (everything from A/C's to the kitchen and bathroom) insured as you are responsible for anything that may happen while you are there.

That's a form for AA Insurance Brokers but I presume Thai Visa Brokers is selling it? Does anyone have anything to say about their policies or perhaps knows of better companies? I prefere to deal with a major bank or something.

If you were to understand insurance then use a broker - forget banks - just a bunch of girls who speak only a little english. Thai visa.com brokers are big and have a good reputation here

I live in a rented unit in a Thai family owned and occupied building, and the Thai owner doesn't carry their own insurance. So I wanted insurance to cover both my own possessions and to protect myself for liability should anything happen while I'm living there...

I consulted with a very good, professional English speaking Thai insurance broker in BKK that I've used happily for the past four years to place my Thai medical insurance....and later other policies such as this one...

The result was to obtain a "Smart Home" policy from AXA Insurance, a large and well-reputed company. I pay about $100 a year and get:

--5 million baht Thailand personal liability coverage for both bodily injury to others and property damage including from fire.

--1 million baht building and home contents coverage, with a 2000 baht deductible for water, wind, earthquake and flood damage.

--100,000 baht cover for temporary accommodation

--200,000 baht cover for family member loss of life

--100,000 baht forcible burglary coverage

For whatever reason, the policy stipulates it excludes coverage for small portable electronics such as laptops, digital cameras, mobile phones and watches...

Another company that offers similar but less expensive policies is MSIG. Both AXA and MSIG policies, essentially to cover renters, should be available from any good local insurance broker. With the relatively modest cost of such policies, there's no reason in my view that anyone renting in Thailand should go unprotected.

That's because those things are expensive and likely to be stolen or damaged. The reality of most policies is they only cover the stuff you aren't interested in, and if you do get cover you'll be paying through the nose.

Generally speaking that is quite true but Thai Visa Insurance Brokers does have a couple of Underwriters who will cover the likes of laptops etc . Note : all mobile phones are out I'm afraid for insurance purposes

Surely there must be a big demand for getting laptops, cameras and other portable electronics insured. I can understand mobile phones and watches not being covered, no matter how expensive - but if you own any of the above and live outside your own country, then basically you're on your own?

Where can I find out more about these underwriters?

Easy - ask for a quote from the Sponsor - Thai Visa Brokers - that's what we did :)
