Venezuelan Parliament gives Chavez decree powers

2010-12-18 21:22:07 GMT+7 (ICT)

CARACAS, VENEZUELA (BNO NEWS) -- Venezuela's National Assembly on Friday approved an "Enabling Law" of 18 months which will grant President Hugo Chavez the power to enact laws to address the emergency that devastated the country, the state-run AVN news agency reported.

On Tuesday, Chavez requested the National Assembly a 12-month extension but the body decided to grant a longer term in order to give more time for solving all the needs and structural repairs after the severe damages left by the devastating floods which killed around 40 people and left some 140,000 others homeless.

The Enabling Law will allow Chavez to assess more swiftly the damages on the infrastructure. After the floods, 35 bridges collapsed, 264 roads were damaged, three water storage facilities destroyed and approximately 46,000 hectares of agricultural fields were lost.

The National Assembly conducted a poll among the affected citizens in regards to the Enabling Law. According to the results, the Venezuelan people are confident that President Chavez will support them and will not abuse the additional power.

The lawmakers urged affected citizens to be patient and remain in their shelters in the meantime. They assured the population that the government will protect their assets and properties while they are in the shelters.

This is the fourth time that Chavez requests special powers during his 12 years of mandate. The last time was in 2007 and the Enabling Law lasted for 18 months. But the opposition in Venezuela has criticized these requests and said that this is an attempt to gain full control of the country and said Chavez is behaving like a dictator.

Chavez slammed the opposition and responded that if he really wanted to take advantage of the situation, he would have requested for a 20-year term, not 12 months. The Venezuelan leader plans to enact laws on housing, agriculture, food, infrastructure and economics.

Last time he nationalized (stole) the oil facilities...and his own party again vote to give him dictatorial powers...

He has been granted power to address problems resulting from a natural disaster, basically cutting through red tape.

Or would you prefer the indifference exhibited by Bush to Hurricane Katrina

Nonsense. Only an extremely top-heavy organization would need to cut out the 'middle management' to handle the help, rebuilding of houses etc, for 18(!!!) months.

If decisions is needed, he can do them in an afternoon and then delegating it to the proper people.

And if you think he will limit his usage if this power to rebuilding houses etc, well...

So you would prefer Bush type indifference and Patriot Act powers rather than 18 month's Enabling Law to address a specific proplem.

Strawman - Hurricane Katrina-issue had NO base in the President lacking dictatorial power. If that is your thinking then you better take a second look into what organization that blew the hootch on that situation.

And if I am against the President getting dictatorial powers, why would I be for the Patriot Act? You are not making any sense...
