Austrian police search more than 100 homes in massive anti-child porn raid

2010-12-20 16:42:53 GMT+7 (ICT)

VIENNA (BNO NEWS) -- Austrian police have searched the homes of more than 100 people suspected of possessing child pornography, in what is being described as the second largest anti-child porn raid ever in the country.

Police said a total of 107 raids had been carried out in Austria in connection with the operation, which was dubbed "Charly". It was launched after Austrian authorities received 163 IP-addresses from Luxembourg, showing these users had accessed files on a server which was hosting child pornography.

Authorities were not able to track down all of the users as some of the IP-addresses led to Internet cafes and other users had managed to hide their real IP-addresses. The others were less lucky.

One of the suspects was found to possess around 20,000 images of child pornography, along with 300 videos, according to police. Other notable cases included four suspects who work as a teacher, while another suspect works at a nursing school.

In 2009, Austrian police arrested and convicted 189 people who were found to be in the possession of child pornography. It was the largest anti-child porn raid in the country's history.

Earlier this year, a total of 104 suspected pedophiles were arrested and charged in Spain in one of country's biggest operations in recent years against child pornography producers and distributors in Spain. Those arrested included engineers, businessmen, students, unemployed, police officers, gardeners, and plumbers.
