JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Indonesian terrorist suspect and Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir was transported to a Jakarta hospital in an armored vehicle on Monday amidst tight security, the Antara news agency reported.

Bashir, 72, who is the head of the Al Mukmin Islamic Boarding School in Ngruki of Central Java, was moved to Aini Eye Hospital in order to undergo eye surgery to have a cataract removed.

The terror suspect arrived at the Jakarta medical facility at around 9:40 a.m. local time in an armored personal carrier. He was joined by Achmad Michdan, head of the Muslim legal Defenders Team, and escorted by several police officers.

Bashir is reportedly having a serious disorder in his left eye and can no longer see the shape and color of things. The disorder began approximately six months ago. The cleric also has a problem with his left leg and other physical disorders due to the lack of light in his cell.

Last week, Indonesian officials said that new terror charges were brought against Bashir and, as a result, he is now facing the death penalty. The Islamic cleric was charged with at least five articles within Indonesia's anti-terrorism laws.

Prosecutors brought dozens of firearms and several documents as evidence of Bashir's activity, which also included the alleged financing of a terror training facility in Aceh. Bashir is the suspected leader of a terrorist paramilitary training facility in the Aceh province of Sumatra.

Bashir previously served 26 months in jail for conspiracy in relation to the 2002 Bali terrorist attacks, in which 202 people were killed. However, Bashir was released in 2006 when his conviction was overturned.

So if he has been charged with more terrorism activities then leave the cataract - why waste money on him? Taking out of security leave the door open for the opportunist killers to try to release him or die trying!
