CHANGSHA, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- At least nine children were killed on Monday when a vehicle taking children to school plunged into a creek in central China, state-run media reported.

The accident happened around 7.30 a.m. local time in Songjiang Township, a district in Hengnan County of central China's Hunan province. At least 20 people were aboard the vehicle when it went off the road and plunged into a creek.

The state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the bodies of nine children had been recovered from the creek, while a tenth person remains missing and is presumed to have drowned. Ten other people were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Other details about the accident were not immediately released, but roads in China are known to be among the most dangerous in the world. Most accidents are the result of drivers violating traffic laws.
