2010-12-27 18:50:50 GMT+7 (ICT)

MOSCOW, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- The Russian Karymsky volcano erupted on Sunday, spewing out hot ash clouds rising up to 4.3 kilometers (2.67 miles) high, local media reported on Monday.

The 1,486-meter (4,875-foot) Karymsky - which is located in the country's Kamchatka Penninsula - is the most active volcano of the region's eastern volcanic zone, the RIA Novosti news agency reported. Twenty-nine of the over 150 volcanoes in the region are active.

In 1996, Karymsky's activity drastically increased and continues with periodic eruptions until the present. Around 20 tremors in the vicinity of the volcano were felt in the past day.

Despite the eruption, there is no immediate threat to local residents or air traffic.
