Obama calls Saudi King to wish him well

HONOLULU (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday called Saudi Arabia King Abdullah to wish him a speedy recovery, the White House said on Monday.

The 86-year-old Saudi Arabian leader underwent successful back surgery in New York last month in order to treat a slipped disc and a blood clot that was pressing on the nerves in his back. Officials have repeatedly said Abdullah is in good health.

"President Obama called King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia this morning to wish him well, and to congratulate him on the progress that he has made toward a full recovery," a White House statement said, adding that King Abdullah congratulated Obama on the recent Senate approval of the new START Treaty.

Obama thanked him and, according to the White House, told Abdullah he is looking forward to working 'closely together' in the coming year. "The two leaders underscored the importance of our bilateral relationship, and agreed to continue cooperating closely on a range of issues," the White House concluded.

Earlier this month, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden made an unannounced visit to the New York City hospital where Abdullah was staying. He was received by King Abdullah's family, including his son Prince Miteb bin Abdullah. During his visit with King Abdullah's family, Biden delivered a personal letter from President Obama for the King, wishing him a speedy recovery.

The royal Al Saud family has ruled Saudi Arabia for the last 60 years. King Abdullah is the 13th son of King Abdulaziz and came to power in 2005 after the death of King Fahd.
