I'm getting married in Isan in mid-February and, like your future wife, my girl enjoys the water as well. So, we're going to to southern Thailand. First stop will be Khao Lak (Phang Nga) where we'll be staying here: www.mukdarabeach.com While I haven't been there before, it's been recommended to me by someone who has, and the pictures look quite nice. It's also only a boat ride away from the Similan Islands, which are well known to scuba and snorkling enthusiasts. Check www.agoda.com for other hotels in the area in your price range. As for getting there, I don't know where in Isan you'll marry, but we'll be flying out of Ubon and landing in Phuket (hotel is approximately a 1 hour taxi ride north from the airport).

Another option is to go to Phuket. I was there back in October and had a terrific time. Looking for a good combination of relatation and partying, we stayed at the Patong Beach Hotel. The room was amazing and the hotel staff were the best I've experienced in Thailand thus far. They are all very helpful with any requests, and treated both me and my girlfriend with the utmost respect. It's also got a nice pool and it's right in the heart of the beach, which means you'll find plenty of activities. We went on a day-long canoe trip and it was the best adventure of our vacation. As for getting there, when you land in Phuket, it's about a 1 hour taxi ride south from the airport.

I'm sure there are many other places to go (Samui, Phi Phi, Krabi, etc), and others might have more suggestions for you. Best of luck!

As someone who knows the whole of the South very well, I will recommend a trip to the South of Thailand.

My favourite "getaway" type places - I am assuming that you're not looking for a tourist trap to spend your honeymoon - are the north west of Koh Pha Ngan, the south west of Koh Samui, Nai Phlao beach (Khanom, Nakhon Sri Thammarat), pretty much anywhere along the Satun coastline or one of the Phang Nga islands.

From what you've said in your OP, Khanom sounds like a great choice. The only issue is getting there - it's about a 90 minute drive from Suratthani and Nakhon Sri Thammarat airports.

If you are looking for something a little bit more touristy, then I'd suggest the north east of Koh Samui, Ao Nang (Krabi) or Phuket.

I would start from Satun....by getting on the ferry across to Langkawi. IMHO the Thai islands have long borne the brunt of sheer unrestrained greed and runaway development that have turned them into symbols of how not to develop tourism.

Just make sure that (1) Your Isaan wife has a readily available supply of somtam and other Thai specialities and (2) Go coastal, it will be bloody hot.

It's your honeymoon, take her to Hong Kong or Singapore. You can go and visit places in Thailand anytime.

What are the visa requirements for a Thai to go to Hong Kong or Singapore? Do all they need is a passport and they get the visa when they land in one of those countries? Or do they need to obtain the visa prior to making the trip?

They just need a passport. Thai's don't need a visa for either of those countries and get stamped in for 15 or 30 days on arrival, I forget the exact amount.
