Thais tough on WA man over sex charges

September 20, 2005 - 7:00PM

A former West Australian police officer facing child sex charges in Thailand has been placed under strict bail conditions ahead of his next court appearance expected in October.

Christopher White was granted bail of 300,000 baht ($A15,000) earlier this month and was ordered to report to police in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai every 12 days.

White was arrested at his home in Bangkok on August 24.

He strenuously denies charges that he sexually abused a teenage girl from Chiang Mai for four years.

White is alleged to have taken the girl, now 16, to live with him in Bangkok.

He is accused of forcing her to perform sexual acts on video with him and his friends.

Child pornography has been allegedly found at his Bangkok home and his home in Perth.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer revoked White's passport last month, and if convicted he could spend up to ten years in prison in Thailand.

He could also face child pornography charges in Australia.

Aussie faces Thai child sex charges

November 2, 2005

A former West Australian policeman charged with serious sex offences against an under-age hill-tribe girl in Thailand is expected to go on trial before the end of this year.

Christopher Ronald White, 46, has been on bail for the past two months.

He has denied allegations that he kept the child as a virtual sex slave for three years. The accused man is said to have met her when she was working as a flower-seller at a night market in the northern city of Chiang Mai.

He has told investigators that her parents agreed to her going to live with him in Bangkok after he promised to pay for her education.

On Tuesday police told AAP that they would now present their evidence, including full details of DNA testing carried out after White was charged, to the public prosecutor by November 16.

A trial was likely to begin soon after in Chiang Mai. The girl recently gave birth to a still-born baby.

A wealth of evidence, say police, is likely to convince the prosecutor to go ahead with a trial.

If convicted White could be jailed for life.

During her time as White's "sex slave" he is alleged to have made pornographic videos showing her and other girls and unidentified men, which were then distributed in Australia.

Aussie in Thailand demands new passport

BANGKOK: -- An former Australian policeman is demanding a new passport after Thai authorities dropped child sex charges against him.

Last month's decision not to prosecute Christopher Ronald White, 46 of Perth, was taken by prosecutors in the northern city of Chiang Mai on the grounds of insufficient evidence.

White has denied any wrongdoing.

His passport was cancelled by Australian authorities after his arrest several months ago.

He has been given consular assistance by the Australian embassy in Bangkok, and it is understood he has visited the embassy to demand that a new travel document be issued to him.
